Extractions

You do your best to care for your teeth. You brush and floss every day. You have your teeth regularly cleaned and examined. However, despite your best efforts, sometimes a tooth can become damaged. It may experience severe decay. It could be damaged as a result of facial trauma. When a tooth is compromised, we do everything we can to save it. However, there are some instances in which a damaged tooth cannot be saved, and therefore needs to be extracted. Extractions are often thought to be a painful, traumatic experience. At Cherry Hill Dental Smiles, we use a minimally invasive technique known as an atraumatic extraction.

What is an Atraumatic Tooth Extraction?

An atraumatic extraction is a procedure used to extract a tooth while causing the least amount of damage, or trauma, to the surrounding bone and soft tissues. This minimally invasive procedure involves the use of specially designed tools. To determine your candidacy for an atraumatic extraction, we first perform a thorough exam, which includes a visual inspection of your mouth as well as x-rays. An atraumatic extraction may not be right for every extraction, but we make our best efforts to use it whenever we can.

How is It Done?

With a traditional tooth extraction, the tooth is gripped with forceps and moved back and forth, widening the periodontal ligaments. In many cases, there is often a loud cracking sound when the tooth is pulled free. An atraumatic extraction, on the other hand, utilizes only vertical forces to remove the tooth. This technique helps to preserve the socket as well as surrounding bone and soft tissue. It can even prove effective for damaged teeth that do not already have a crown on them or teeth that have suffered from vertical fractures.

Many patients fear that they will be left with an unsightly gap in their smile following their extraction. Rest assured that we can restore the appearance of your smile, and protect your oral health following your procedure. Before we even begin your extraction, we will discuss your options for replacement. Whenever possible, dental implants will be recommended immediately following the extraction. If implants are not possible, bridges or dentures will also be explored. Our goal is to remove your tooth with as little trauma as possible and restore the appearance, and health, of your smile.

Benefits of an Atraumatic Extraction

Atraumatic extractions offer many benefits. One of the biggest benefits is that this procedure aims to preserve as much bone mass as possible. In doing so, we maximize the amount of bone mass available to support a dental implant, whether the implant is placed immediately following the extraction, or if the implant is scheduled for a later date. Because an atraumatic extraction is minimally invasive and much gentler, it is often better received by patients who are nervous about having a tooth removed.

Also, there is less risk to surrounding bone, soft tissue, and the nerves, which can mean much better results following the restoration of the extracted tooth.

An atraumatic tooth extraction will help to minimize the amount of bone and tissue damage caused in the extraction process. For more information, and to schedule your consultation, contact Cherry Hill Dental Smiles at 856-667-3737 today.
