Luckily, there are many solutions to lost teeth, and you may choose between implants or dentures. Dental implants are an effective way to restore bite function. At Cherry Hill Dental Smiles, we place dental implants in the areas where empty spaces have been left behind after tooth loss. Implants look no different than your real teeth and help support your oral health for many years. One question patients have when seeking a dental implant procedure is what implant material to use.

What Implants Materials are Available?

For many years, dentists used titanium as the only material in implant dentistry. However, as technology continues to grow and evolve, so are the options for implant materials. The two main materials that dentists use are titanium and zirconia. Before implant materials are approved for use, extensive research and testing have to be done, including the physical and chemical properties of the materials. Dental implant materials should be resistant to corrosion and fracturing while also ensuring proper composition, biocompatibility, and microstructure.

Titanium Dental Implants

Titanium implants have the broadest use in implant dentistry. A major benefit of titanium implants is they do not disturb the jawbone. Once the titanium post is placed, the jawbone can still grow next to it as it would your natural tooth, allowing the implants to remain sturdy and last longer. Again, titanium implants are a versatile option and cost-effective. A majority of titanium implants are fabricated from titanium alloys or a mixture of metals. Since titanium is biocompatible, it resembles the human body, thus making it easy to fuse to the bone.

Zirconia Dental Implants

Though titanium implants have been around for a long period, zirconia is relatively a new entry into implant dentistry. Many patients having concerns with allergies arising from metals or are worried about putting metal into their bodies would want an alternative to titanium. In that case, zirconia implants make an ideal choice. They are considered free of metal. The material is extremely hard and strong. It also fuses to the bone in a similar way to titanium.

Even with that, there is a prominent downfall when it comes to using zirconia implants. These implants entered the implant industry recently, meaning they have not been subjected to the same testing level as titanium. Although zirconia is likely to fracture easier than titanium, it is less prone to corrosion. Additionally, it does not leave dark metal color on the gums over time.

Which Material Should You Choose?

The decision as to whether to choose zirconia or titanium as your preferred material for a dental implant procedure is based solely on your preferences, the risk of metal allergies, and the advice from our dentist. We work closely with patients to determine what material to use. We highlight the pros and cons of each, enabling you to choose the best and safer option.
