What Are Dental Implants?
A tooth restoration procedure, a dental implant consists of three parts. The implant takes the place of a tooth root and is embedded directly into your jawbone. The implant is attached to an abutment that connects it to the third component, which is a crown (pontic tooth).
Dental implants are used to replace single or multiple teeth. Several teeth in a row can be replaced with two or more implants that support an implant-supported bridge, or a complete arch of teeth can be replaced with the fixed All-on-4® Treatment Concept or a removable implant-supported overdenture.
What Is the Procedure for Dental Implants?
The procedure varies depending on what implant treatment you are having. For single implants, the process involves placing the implant in the jaw and waiting for it to fuse with the jawbone before the abutment and crown are attached. It may be four months or more from the placement of the implant until the crown is fitted.
However, the All-on-4® treatment, even though it replaces a complete arch of teeth just for dental implants, can be completed in one session. That is, the arch of teeth is affixed to the dental implants on the same day.
Is There An Age Limit for Dental Implants?
Dental implants are not usually placed in anybody younger than 18 years old, simply because the bones haven’t stopped growing. However, there is no upper age limit and providing you do not have any health issues that will make you an unsuitable candidate there is no reason that you cannot have successful implant surgery.
Are There Any Other Factors Where I May Be Unsuitable?
One of the major issues for the successful placement of dental implants is the volume of bone available in the jaw. If there is not enough bone, there is nothing for the implant to integrate with. If you do have bone loss, it could be a problem, although it may depend on the extent of the loss and where it is in relation to where the implant is to be placed. Even with bone loss, it is still possible to have dental implants, but you may need to have a bone graft procedure first.
Another problem if you want dental implants is if you smoke. We’re all aware of the health issues surrounding smoking, but it has a particularly detrimental effect on dental implants. Since smoking diminishes blood flow, crucial nutrients, and oxygen that is transported around the body in the blood may be reduced. This will have an adverse effect on the dental implant as healing properties and the ability to fight infection are compromised around the implant. Ultimately, this may lead to your dental implant failing to integrate with your jawbone, resulting in its removal.
