Common Oral Surgery Procedures

Posted on 2/7/2022 by Evan
Common Oral Surgery ProceduresOral surgery is a type of dental procedure that can correct oral problems. Oral surgeons are specially trained in diagnosing, preventing, and treating diseases affecting the structures inside your mouth. Many common types of oral surgeries procedures may be necessary depending on the severity of your condition.

Scaling or root planing

Scaling and root planing is the process of removing plaque and tartar from your teeth. Deep scaling is a general term that describes procedures used to clean below the gum line on both root surfaces, where bacteria accumulate even if you brush and floss regularly.

Extractions

Extractions are performed when teeth must be removed because they cannot successfully be repaired or saved using other methods such as fillings, crowns, etc. Extraction of the tooth does not necessarily mean an implant will need to take its place; however, it may require stitches due to bleeding caused by the surgery.

Ridge Preservation

The alveolar ridge, which consists primarily of maxilla bone where your upper molars reside, needs support after losing a tooth because without teeth, this part of the jawbone starts the resorption process until eventually collapses so ridge preservation aims at preventing this from happening following extraction of one or more teeth for implants placement much later would be possible.

Alveoplasty

This procedure can help to improve your chewing, swallowing, and speaking ability which becomes problematic when the jawbone is not correctly aligned because of an injury or other causes such as tumors that affect it.

Dental implants

Implants are artificial tooth roots put in your jaw. You can replace teeth with them. Once you lose a tooth, the bone around it will start to break down because it has nothing to hold onto. Implants will help stop this. If you have false teeth before dental implant surgery, they may not fit right after the surgery because they cannot hold anything in place to keep them up anymore.

Gingivectomy

Gingivectomy is a surgery that involves the removal of excess gum tissue. It can be performed to improve your teeth appearance or treat gum disease.

Be sure to consult with us to see if any of these procedures may be right for you. If you have any questions about these and other procedures, please don't hesitate to ask.
