When Tooth Decay Just Starts, Some May Be Reversible

Posted on 7/26/2021 by Evan
When Tooth Decay Just Starts, Some May Be ReversibleTooth decay, in the very first stages, can be reversed. At this point, the tooth decay can be reversed through a process known as remineralization. However, once the decay past the enamel and into the dentin, you will need to get a filling.

Reversing Tooth Decay in Its Early Stages

According to the National Institute of Dental and Craniofacial Research, tooth decay can be reversed in the earliest stages, provided a routine of regular oral care continues and fluoride is applied to the tooth surface. During the day, a type of tug-of-war goes on between good and bad mouth bacteria. While one team leaves a sticky colorless, acid-causing film called plaque on the teeth, the other team is made up of minerals in the saliva. The 2 primary minerals include phosphate and calcium. While the bad bacteria attacks the enamel of the teeth with acids, the other team replaces the minerals lost during these attacks. Therefore, the teeth go through a process where they lose and replace minerals all day long. If you use fluoride to combat cavities, you can win in your battle against tooth decay.

Using Fluoride to Reverse Tooth Decay

Fluoride is a mineral that prevents the progression of tooth decay by reversing it or stopping early decay. It reduces the ability of bacteria to form acids and replaces the minerals lost during the process of demineralization. You can get fluoride in drinking water in your community water supply. You can also get fluoride by brushing with a toothpaste that contains fluoride. Fluoride mouth rinses, as long as they are alcohol-free, also serve to restore teeth with early dental decay. If we believe your child may need to get more fluoride, we may recommend applying a fluoride varnish to the surface of the teeth, or prescribe fluoride tablets.

If we discover a reversible form of dental decay, we will apply fluoride treatments in-office and monitor the sites carefully on future dental visits. Be proactive about your dental care.
